| Chacabuco
is the name of an abandoned former nitrate mining town
in the Atacama Desert in Chile. When I first went there,
in 1995, I discovered that it hides a terrible secret
- the Pinochet dictatorship incarcerated political
prisoners there in the 1970s. An unknown number were
killed and thrown to the desert. This drama, based
on my own experiences as a travel writer, follows a
jaded newspaper hack called Dan Miller as he journeys
back to life and hope with the help of two little girls
- one his own and one, Rebequita, who now lies beneath
the surface of the driest place on earth. |
