Chacabuco, Radio 4 afternoon play
A Sweet Talk production (producer Karen Rose) starring Euan Bailey, broadcast August 2005

Intro

Chacabuco is the name of an abandoned former nitrate mining town in the Atacama Desert in Chile. When I first went there, in 1995, I discovered that it hides a terrible secret - the Pinochet dictatorship incarcerated political prisoners there in the 1970s. An unknown number were killed and thrown to the desert. This drama, based on my own experiences as a travel writer, follows a jaded newspaper hack called Dan Miller as he journeys back to life and hope with the help of two little girls - one his own and one, Rebequita, who now lies beneath the surface of the driest place on earth.
