The Disappearing Island, Radio 4 afternoon play
A Sweet Talk production (producer Karen Rose) starring Mark Heap, broadcast December 2004
(repeated in 2006)

Intro

Mark Heap, who plays the wonderfully insane Dr Alan Statham in Green Wing, animates my character Tom Quincey in this attempt at comedy and slapstick, loosely (very loosely...) based on events in the life of the 19th-century opium-eater and essayist, Thomas De Quincey. Fighting cannabis psychosis, Tom, a schoolteacher, retreats to the Lake District to become a writer. After several strange encounters with Mr Wilson of Elleray (played by the perennially excellent Paul Copley), he conceives a ridiculous idea for a self-help manual.
